چکیده

Machine vision and automated processing systems are under development at Virginia Tech University with support and cooperation from the USDA Forest Service. Our goals are to help U.S. hardwood producers automate, reduce costs, increase product volume and value recovery, and market higher value, more accurately graded and described products. Any vision system is composed of two bread tasks: image scanning and image interpretation. A rough lumber vision system recognizes board defects, clear wood, and board outlines, and labels these areas. Two available computer programs can use this defect information. The first program grades the board by National Hardwood Lumber Association grading rules. The second program simulates the processing of the board into standard or specific cuttings or part sizes by two different cutup methods. One goal of the vision system is to analyze images of rough lumber in a species-independent man-

Effect of Curve Sawing on Lumber Recovery and Warp of Short Cherry Logs Containing Sweep

—It has been estimated that approximately one-third of hardwood sawlogs have a significant amount of sweep and that 7 to nearly 40 percent of the yield is lost from logs that have greater than 1 inch of sweep. While decreased yield is important, for hardwood logs the loss of lumber value is likely more significant. A method that produced lumber while accounting for log curvature (sweep) would a...

Design and prototype development of a computer vision-based lumber production planning system

A computer vision-based lumber production planning system (CVLPPS) is described. Computer axial tomography (CT or CAT) images of hardwood logs are analyzed for identi®cation and classi®cation of internal log defects. Individual CT image slices are analyzed for detection of 2D defects which are correlated across CT image slices in order to establish 3D support and identify true 3D defects. CVLPP...

The effect of curve sawing two-sided cants from small-diameter hardwood sawlogs on lumber and pallet part yields

Curve sawing is a primary log breakdown process that incorporates gang-saw technology to allow two-sided cants from logs with sweep to be cut parallel to the log surface or log axis. Since curve-sawn logs with sweep are cut along the grain, the potential for producing high quality straight-grain lumber and cants increases, and strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability are maximized. Presen...

The frequency and level of sweep in mixed hardwood saw logs in the eastern United States

Hardwood sawmills traditionally saw logs in a manner that either orients sawlines parallel to the log central axis (straight sawing) or the log surface (allowing for taper). Sweep is characterized as uniform curvature along the entire length of a log. For logs with sweep, lumber yield losses from straight and taper sawing increase with increasing levels of sweep. Curve sawing logs with sweep wi...

Scanning System Technology worth a Look

Editor’s note: In an effort to help automate the inspection for lumber defects, optical scanning systems are emerging as an alternative to the human eye. Although still in its infancy, scanning technology is being explored by machine companies and universities. The following article was excerpted from “Machine Vision Systems for Grading and Processing Hardwood Lumber, ” by Philip A. Araman and ...
